Welcome back to our business insurance blog. As promised in our previous business insurance blog post, today we'll discuss the specific risks associated with hiring a non-insured or under-insured contractor. What you are about to read should be a call to act for business owners who do not fully understand the protections that business insurance delivers to you and your family. So many things can go tragically wrong out there and end it all, not just for you, but your family as well.
Don't panic about any of this should you read and determine that you and your family are at risk. We can get you and your family the precise business insurance policies that protect you from these scenarios:
You could be held liable for damages - If an uninsured contractor damages your property, you could be held responsible for the repairs. This is especially true if the damage was caused by negligence on the part of the contractor.
You could be sued - If an uninsured contractor is injured while working on your property, they could sue you for their medical bills and lost wages. Even if you're not found to be at fault, the cost of defending yourself in court can be significant.
It could damage your property - If an uninsured contractor makes a mistake while working on your home or business, it could end up costing you a lot of money to fix.
You could be breaking the law - It's against the law- In some states, it's actually against the law to hire an uninsured contractor.
Once again, always ask to see a contractor's insurance information before hiring them. You should also make sure to get a certificate of insurance from the contractor. This document will list the types and amounts of coverage that the contractor has.
